About the Smart Coast Nonprofit

From the archive. This page keeps material published on this domain by Smart Coast, a Fairhope, Alabama nonprofit, in the years around 2004–2013. It is preserved as a record; the magazine that publishes smartcoast.org today is independent and is not that nonprofit. For about a decade this domain was the website of Smart Coast, a nonprofit based in Fairhope, Alabama. It worked across Mobile and Baldwin counties on what it called healthy, flourishing coastal communities: towns where children can walk to school, streets are safe for everyone and businesses take the environment seriously.
The nonprofit grew out of workshops on growth management for county officials, ran conferences on smart growth, mixed-use towns and green building between 2004 and 2008, and then concentrated on two initiatives: Healthy Coastal Communities (Smart Walks to school and Complete Streets) and the Green Coast Council for sustainable business.
