The conferences on smart growth, mixed-use towns and green building that started it all.
From the archive. This page keeps material published on this domain by Smart Coast, a Fairhope, Alabama nonprofit, in the years around 2004–2013. It is preserved as a record; the magazine that publishes smartcoast.org today is independent and is not that nonprofit. Contact details and personal information have been removed, and pictures that no longer exist have been replaced with credited photographs.

Before it concentrated on walking to school and Complete Streets, the nonprofit spent its first years bringing people together to talk about how the fast-growing coast should grow. These were the main gatherings, as recorded on its website:
- Smart Growth for Coastal Alabama: a conference and a follow-up roundtable in 2004
- Imagine: A Region With Mixed-Use Cities: a 2006 conference in Mobile
- Green building: workshops and the GreenCoast conference of 2008
- The S.H.I.F.T. workshop on sustainability at the 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center
