[EDIT]

September was launched as National Obesity Awareness Month in 2010

Programs across the nation are hoping to get children more active this month as they begin a lifetime commitment to more healthy lifestyles. The statistics and headlines about this epidemicare shocking!

During the past 4 decades, obesity rates have soared!

More than 23 million children & teenagers (ages 2-19) are obese or overweight!

Obesity poses a major threat to our children’s health!

Costs amount to $14 billion per year!

Americans spend approximately 9% of their total medical costs on obesity-related illnesses!

Obese youth have an 80% chance of becoming obese adults!

Obese youth have a greater risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke & sleep apnea!

Nothing is more important than promoting healthy children. Childhood obesity is entirely preventable. Children need information and guidance so that they can make better decisions about eating and exercise.  Information and resources can also be found at www.coam-month.org.
